Boy Scouts of America is for boys ages 11 through 17. As a scout grows in skill, he takes on responsibility and moves from being a learner to being a leader. If your son is younger please contact your local scout office to locate a Cub Scout Pack in your area.
Boys may join Boy Scouts as a continuation of their trail from Cub Scouts - this is where the majority of Boy Scouts come from. But, the age of 11 is an great time for a new boy to begin scouting! The Boy Scout program is a big change from Cub Scouting, the biggest change being that it is boy led instead of adult led.
Chapter three of The Scoutmaster’s Handbook starts with this strong statement:
“Empowering boys to be leaders is the core of Scouting.
Scouts learn by doing, and what they do is lead their patrols and their troop.
The boys themselves develop a troop program, then take responsibility for figuring out how they will achieve the goals.
One of our most important challenges is to train boy leaders to run the troop by providing direction, coaching and support.
The boys will make mistakes now and then and will rely upon the adult leaders to guide them.
But only through real hands-on experience as leaders can boys learn to lead”.
At Troop 291 we believe:
- It's not the job of the adults to take the responsibility for the scouts, but to guide the scouts in their responsibilities.
- We should embrace teachable moments and provide opportunities and experiences to our scouts that boys outside of scouting may not have.
- The boys and our Troop can make a difference in our community, one person at a time.
- We should aspire to a standard of action, respect, and knowledge that is an example to the community and to other scout troops.
- Most importantly, that all we do and say should bring glory to Jesus Christ.
